MAC Applauds CDBG Grant for Lafourche Levee, Urges Federal Government Funding for Morganza

(HOUMA) Representatives of the Morganza Action Coalition (MAC) today thanked Governor Jindal, members of the Coastal Protection Restoration Authority (CPRA), Lafourche Parish, and the Sustainable Coastal Communities Program for their roles in the awarding of a $8.4 million Community Development Block Grant to the Cut Off/Pointe-aux-Chene levee project in Lafourche Parish.

“We are pleased that the Governor and our state and local leaders continue to recognize our region’s critical need for more effective hurricane protection, and are thankful for their support of ongoing efforts to protect lives and property in our vital region,” says MAC Chairman of the Board Berwick Duval. “However, while today’s announcement is a great step forward, our largest challenge continues to be securing federal funding to complete the important Morganza-to-the-Gulf Hurricane Protection System and protect over 120,000 residents of Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes from devastating storm surge. This remains the focus of our Morganza Action Coalition.”

The Cut Off/Point-aux-Chene levee upgrades included in the Governor’s grant announcement today will provide a heightened level of storm surge protection for more than 12,000 residents in Lafourche and Terrebonne Parish, and will provide a critical link between the south Lafourche levee system and the Morganza-to-the-Gulf Hurricane Protection System, now under construction with only state and local dollars.

“Members of the Morganza Action Coalition are committed to pounding the pavement on Capitol Hill to secure much-deserved federal dollars to construct the complete the entire Morganza levee, lock and floodgate system and provide a level of hurricane protection commensurate with our region’s economic and ecological value to this nation,” explains MAC consultant Lori LeBlanc. “Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes are worth protecting, and our people deserve the federal government’s support to ensure our future sustainability in this valuable piece of American real estate.”
