HNC "Bubba Dove" Floodgate is Huge Achievement for Terrebonne Parish Residents

Floodgate Ribbon Cutting
Morganza Action Coalition joined in the celebration Wednesday as the Houma Navigation Canal Bubba Dove Floodgate near Dulac was officially dedicated.  The floodgate represents the largest infrastructure project built in Louisiana with only local and state funds.  MAC President Sharon Bergeron shared these thoughts on this momentous achievement for our parish's hurricane protection efforts:

This is a wonderful day for all of us living and working in Terrebonne Parish, and for everyone who has fought so hard for flood protection in our parish. On behalf of the members of the Morganza Action Coalition (MAC), I applaud the Terrebonne Levee and Conservation District, Terrebonne Parish Government, our state legislative delegation, and the State of Louisiana for making this new floodgate on the Houma Navigation Canal (HNC) a priority and a reality. We give special thanks to Rep. Gordon Dove, who worked tirelessly to advance this project on the state level and whose late son's name is memorialized on this impressive structure.

The Bubba Dove Floodgate will provide a significant barrier of protection between our homes and businesses and the devastating Gulf storm surge that threatens our lives and our property during hurricane events. It also symbolizes the perseverance and dedication of our proud Terrebonne Parish residents who have committed not only once, but twice, to taxing themselves to construct levees and floodgates that protect our community, all while we push for full authorization and federal funding of the complete Morganza to the Gulf system.

MAC is aggressively working to achieve federal authorization for Morganza in the 2013 Water Resources and Development Act (WRDA), which will allow us to seek federal funding for the full project. We continue to pound the pavement on Capitol Hill to convince federal lawmakers that our unique region, its hard-working people, and our valuable economy are worth protecting.

Thank you for your support!
