Levee bill closer to approval

April 30, 2014

The federal Morganza-to-the-Gulf levee project inched a little closer to reality Tuesday as it received approval from the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La, requested the review in a letter she sent to the committee’s chair Monday. Her staff noted it was one of the reasons the project to protect Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes from flood damage was not included in the House’s version of water resources legislation. The project was included in the Senate version and a conference committee is negotiating the final bill.

U.S. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., is on the conference committee and claims to have ensured the project’s inclusion in the final legislation.

Even if it is approved by Congress, the $10 billion project needs to be paid for. Local tax dollars are expected to contribute between $500 million and $800 million within the next four to seven years.
